  1. A Complete Transcription (PDF file ) is a full writing of a recorded conversation, from beginning to end (text only example).
  2. A Limited Transcription is a transcription done within a time or space limit.
    • To do a Time-limited Transcription (PDF file ), find an interesting or useful part of your conversation, write down the start time, and transcribe for the time limit.
    • To do a Space-limited Transcription (PDF file ), find an interesting or useful part of your conversation and transcribe until the space on the form, notebook, or other media is filled.
  3. A Focused Transcription focuses on several interesting or useful parts of the conversation (PDF file ).
  4. A Sandwich Transcription (PDF file ) is one line of a conversation, sandwiched between other lines (text only example) .
  • To write a Summary, listen to the whole conversation and then write the main points of the conversation. Summaries often include analysis. (PDF file ).
  • A Transummary is a combination of transcription, summary, and analysis. This is an effective follow-up technique when you are familiar with transcription and summary (PDF file ).

Most students use transcription forms, notebooks, or word processor files, but others have used e-mail. Ask your teacher which media you should use.

Use a colored pen to make Corrections either in the left column of the transcription form or directly on the transcription (PDF file ).

You should also write Improvements, which are words and phrases that make your conversation better (PDF file ).

Your teacher may use Correction marks to help you correct your correct and improve your conversation (PDF file ).

Completing a Self-evaluation form (PDF file ) can help you think about ways to improve your conversations, give advice to your partners, and plan your goals for later conversations. Answering the self-evaluation questions is an important step in improving your English conversation skills.
