MAC BASICS

I.  START YOUR COMPUTER

1. Push the start button. 

2. Wait for the desktop to appear. The desktop, the blue area, is Macintosh operating system (OS) software. 

II.  SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER

NOTE: The Macintosh must always be shut down correctly!

1. Go to Finder mode, either from the Finder menu or by clicking on the desktop. (The Finder is also Macintosh system software.) 

2. In Finder mode, click on the Special menu. 

3. Drag to and select System Shutdown

III.  START AN APPLICATION

1. Click on the Apple menu. 

2. Drag to Applications. 

3. Select, for example, Internet Explorer

4. Internet Explorer will appear in a window. 

IV.  SWITCHING BETWEEN SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

1. Go to the Finder menu. 

2. Drag to and select, for example, Finder or Internet Explorer. (You can also change applications by clicking in their windows or on the desktop.) 

V.  ESCAPING A FREEZE

NOTE: A freeze is when nothing on the screen will move.

1. Show your teacher.

2. Push and hold the start button to restart.
